Tourist
When I visited Dijon last summer, I came across a small, very pretty, courtyard (see above pic), which inspired me to model the below 3d scene.
As I have very limited time to work on my illustrations and stories, using the right software, to save time, has become invaluable. Texturing, is as time-consuming as 3d modelling (if not more) so I’ve invested in Substance Painter, for my texturing needs.
I enrolled in a couple of online Substance Painter courses and used the untextured Blender scene to practise the techniques and texturing methods taught.
The finished results are below:
Substance Painter is a fantastic software, relatively easy to use and you can create stunning results in very little time.
Below is a brief video showing how I modelled and textured my illustration.
Anna wants to play!
Even though Anna has a very minute role in my picture book, she’s becoming my favourite character!
A witch, by an old footbridge!
Been working on the nature (grass, trees etc.) on this illustration and it’s coming along nicely.
Hair Gone Wild!
Blender does not always play nicely. For some strange reason it decided my little character was having a bad hair day 🙂
Lighting & colour
Lighting is something that I’ve been paying more attention to. And lately, I’ve also been reading about colour schemes and colour theory.
I’m reworking some of my illustrations to employ what I’ve learnt in the last few weeks. The idea is to go back and recolour and re do the lightning to improve the illustrations.
Below are two pics that I’ve been working on this month (click to view whole image).
My inspiration has returned !
I’m pleased to say that I’ve finished my little side project and the break has worked wonders. My inspiration has returned and I can’t wait to apply all the new things that I’ve learnt about blender to my new illustrations.
I now understand a lot more about Blender Cycles which I will be using in the future. I’ve also learnt some very handy techniques in texturing which I hope will improve my work too. It certainly pays off to take a few weeks out to recharge the old ‘inspirational’ batteries.
Here’s my (almost) finished illustration.
And here’s a little video, showing the modelling stages of the 3d model.
